Hello all, I have been on an extensive research session studying so much over the last couple of weeks that I am on a brain overload. I had no idea of all the wonderful resources about pollinators that can be on just one website, Xerces.org because of this I am going to focus on the one website for a couple of posts and only touch on some of their programs. This post will give a quick overview of Xerces.org and will have some quick links to get you started. (There is no need for you to be overwhelmed too!)
The Xerces Society does extensive work in the conservation of invertebrates. Xerces is named after the Xerces Butterfly that went extinct during WWII, when their habitat was paved over to make way for a military base. (The Joe Gardner Podcast) This society was started in 1971 and I am completely amazed at all the work they have done in the last 48 years. This is just some of the programs they have headed up and/or participated in;
2. Pollinators pledge
4. Pollinator – friendly Plant lists for Regions of the United States and beyond
5. Bee Better Certified
6. Working with farmers to plant for pollinators
Xerces.org is an extensive resource on pollinator conservation. On this one webpage alone (https://xerces.org/pollinator-conservation-resources-us-and-canada/)you learn a lot of incredible, scientific based information. (Each plus sign can be expanded to learn more.) Not only are these resources available but Xerces has free PDF books to download, books you get when you donate, videos and so much more. Every time I visit their site I find something new, wonderful and exciting!
For example The Xerces Society has four easy steps to bring pollinators back. They are
1. Plant Flowers
2. Provide a Home
3. No Pesticides
4. Let your friends and neighbors know
https://xerces.org/bringbackthepollinators/
Each one of these programs focuses on part or all of these 4 steps.
Bee Better Certified https://beebettercertified.org/ helps growers and consumers understand pollinator habitat and how they can contribute to the conservation of pollinators and what benefits will be gained in the process. It is a good way to know where your food is coming from and when you buy Bee Better Certified products you help the local economy and ecosystem.
I am going to stop right here so as not to overwhelm and because this is an easy place for people to start. Pick one thing to understand and work into your life. I started by wanting to learn more and I hope you do too. Next, I will focus on Xerces work with Bumble Bees. You will be amazed at the simple things you can do to help these beautiful creatures.
